Translation is the closest possible reading one can give to a poem—a lover’s reading. Translation is also a type of shamanism. One reads words and sees images inside someone else’s head. Then one speaks in tongues. In the end, all poetry is translation of an uncertain and often absent original.

—Charles Simic
  Serbian-American poet (b. 1938)
